About The Course

Simulation in Mental Heath is a programme aimed to improve the skills of trainees in the management of emergency situations they may face in psychiatric practice. This training takes place in a simulated ward environment with medical, nursing and support staff present as well as actors. Trainees are observed managing a simulated ward based emergency situation that is designed to be as realistic as possible and managed in real time. Trainees’ performance is recorded and this is used along with facilitator comments and discussion to provide feedback.

The situations include emergencies that are primarily psychiatric and those that are more physical health based:

  • • Management of a fall with a queried fractured neck of Femur
  • • Opiate overdose
  • • Managing an agitated patient using rapid tranquilisation
  • • Conducting a Seclusion review
  • • Managing an attempted ligature
  • • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
  • • Wernicke's encephalopathy
