Today, we held a regional Delirium conference ahead of the World Delirium Awareness Day WDAD 2025 (12 March 2025). The theme of the WDAD2025 is Clear Minds: Raising Delirium Awareness.
The Faculty of Patient safety- NHS England Education is proud to be one of the leading organisations is trailblazing the delirium awareness campaign in our region for over a decade.
Our previous regional conferences were themed at raising awareness to various professional group (hospitals and community). For this years conference we wanted to focus on Detect and Prevent Delirium across all ages. Sharing and learning from our regional institutions.
Chair of our faculty of patient safety and Associate Dean, Dr Kate Williamson opened the conference, "Today's event marks a 10 year milestone in our delirium journey as a Faculty and today embraces all of the workstreams including patients safety, learning from patient events, immersive simulation and features MELISSA and our inflatable brainarium. This year we are recognising delirium across all age demographics and i am thrilled at the diverse range of attendees from the commnuity, primary care and secondary care"

Dr Ahmad Khundakar gave a keynote speech sharing his experience as a carer and how his experience motivated to run Delirium Research in the community as an academic from Teesside University.
We had very engaging update from our regional delirium group sharing their local initiatives and success stories including barriers to address and improve delirium care in our region.
Dr Jean MacLeod Consultant Physician and Lead Medical Examiner gave a talk on Impact of Delirium on all age mortality.
Dr Charlotte Bates, Consultant in Emergency medicine, shared her experience hon challenges in management of delirium and how delirium presents in different age group.
We had three very interesting workshops in the afternoon delivered by our colleagues in the region. Sharing success stories and challenges on implementing delirium detection and management, roundtable discussion on how patients with delirium may be excluded from existing pathways.
Northumbria Health Care Academy were also developing a Virtual Reality Delirium e-Learning module. The colleague from the Northumbria Health care trust gave a introduction to the module and also some of the delegates were able to visit the Immersive suite. (the module is soon to be released)
Our on Mobile Educational resource bus MELISSA and despite the rain, the inflatable brain ERIIC was showcased in the conference to share how the resources can be used across the region – this was facilitated by our MELISSA team.
We had excellent enthusiasm and engagement to this face-to-face event. Within days of opening for registration all the slots were full and we were oversubscribed.
110 Delegates attended the event. We shared our various delirium resources that can be used in local services for the delegates and will also be making all the resources available for World Delirium Day 12th March 2025.
